The Citizens’ Budget in Katowice has already completed 4th editions. Every year, the city earmarks PLN 20 million for it, the expenditure of which is decided by the inhabitants of individual districts. The overriding objective of the activities is to improve the common usable space. On the residents’ initiative, new sidewalks, parking spaces, elements of small architecture and new green spaces are created. The money can be intended in principle for any purpose that will be justified and will gather a sufficient number of votes.
What types of topics are the most popular? For which groups of recipients are intended? How does the activity break down geographically? For what reasons the applications were rejected most often? We will try to answer these and other questions by examining Citizens’ Budget in Katowice during Open Data Day in Katowice.
The task group will be led by Paulina Urbańska Medialab of Katowice, in collaboration with the creator of the city budget visualisation for 2016, Justyna Lauer of Katowice’s Academy of Fine Arts.
Our task group is open to city officials, activists, NGO representatives, designers, programmers and all those interested in the functioning of the city and data exploration and visualisation.
