The latest Medialab release is devoted to the history and evolution of Katowice’s Kościuszki Street. This nearly 300- hundred-page-long monograph on the street, edited by Magdalena Chmiel, contains articles by (ordered as listed in the table of contents) Irma Kozina, Przemysław Piwowarczyk, Marek Wojcik, Jacek Maniecki and Ryszard Nakonieczny.

The material presented in the publication traces the rise and development of Kościuszki Street from several perspectives: in the context of the entire city, from the perspective of the Zimmermann family, which played a pivotal role in the street’s history, as well as from that of other residents and entrepreneurs, and finally from the perspective of the efforts of local property investors and builders.

The book ends with a photo essay by Krzysztof Szewczyk. Detailed photographs of townhouses and other sites in Kościuszki Street provide an opportunity to admire the details while at the same time viewing the street from a distance. What do these images say about the contemporary city and its residents? What is life like today in the ‘promenade’ street?

The readers of The Southbound Promenade. The story of Kościuszki Street may ask themselves if it is the story of just one street, or perhaps the story of the development of Katowice as a whole. And not unjustifiably so. By tracing the events that shaped this area of the city, one can more fully understand the history of the entire region.
